CBD for Opioid Addiction

While there are many self-made problems in the world, from obesity to pollution, one of the scariest epidemics faced by human beings everywhere is opioid addiction.

Substance abuse is an enormous social problem in South Africa and it is increasing every day. Opioids are some of the most frequently used substances in this country, according to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).

For decades, thousands of people have turned to both prescription and non-prescription opioids to help deal with despondency and discomfort. When ingested, opioids release endorphins, creating a feeling of euphoria that many people crave when trying to overcome hard times or serious injuries and it is because of this, that people become addicted even when they don’t need the drugs anymore.

In the United States states that have legalized medical marijuana have seen up to 25% fewer opioid-related deaths than other, non-legal states. Now, more and more studies are showing that cannabidiol (CBD) may help reduce symptoms of addiction without the psychoactive effects. CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System in our bodies, which plays an important role in helping regulate an array of physiological and cognitive processes. CBD has shown to reduce drug cue-induced craving and anxiety.

As public approval of the legalization of CBD and cannabis products continues to increase, more and more people are finding hope in these natural alternatives. However, the use of CBD will not change the outcome of this epidemic overnight. As a society, we are prone to addiction – whether it be opioids or food and even technology.

It is important to increase awareness and education about these alternatives, as well as the importance of our health and wellness, in order to prevent and defeat this heartbreaking epidemic!
